Sumner Junior High School OSPI Inclusion Grant Progress Report 2001

The SIP program at Sumner Junior High School allowed money for a group of teachers who were highly interested in special education inclusion to meet. Originally we met as a pilot group. Our charge was to find a way to collect some baseline data, identify specific standard learning disabilities, design modification interventions, collect post intervention data, and see what works. To begin, we purchased a good resource book Inclusion- 450 Strategies for Success.

We started by focusing on only a handful of kids, met every two weeks to discuss how it was going, share results, and adjust.

We found:

  • Dialoging with colleagues about special education created challenges that were invigorating and stimulated creativity.
  • Teaching in isolation with students with special needs is difficult and a sounding board helped relieve some frustration.
  • It was a great place to start and soon the inclusion strategy book became obsolete.
  • Our motto was "keep it simple" in terms of modifications that we called adjustments.
  • Meeting together was the key and we wanted to find ways to involve the whole staff.

How did SIP work?

  • SIP meetings after every faculty meeting
  • Began with results
    • Shared with staff the grade distributions
    • Found that special education students included in classes were not being successful
    • Discussed and strategized how to help them improve
    • Teachers are attentive to special education students' needs

The SIP teams have expanded to include the whole school. The teams continue to collect data regarding their effectiveness, to give direction, and to keep them going to help answer the question, "Why are we doing this?"

"Arm quality people with quality information and they will make a quality decision."
