What We Have Done:
-General education teachers and specialists have met to discuss students, plan programs, share ideas, and to go through building computer software appropriate for SIP students-Purchased about $ 1,000 worth of materials to be checked out and used by all EHE staff (including content area materials for class assignment modifications, close reading passages, low reading level/high interest reading passages with related questions, etc.)
-Attended two related conferences titled 'Motivating the Unmotivated," and "The Underachieving and Apathetic Youngster" (by The Love and Logic Institute)
-Watched video "How Hard Can It Be: The F.A.T. City Workshop" by Richard Lavoie and discussed the challenges of teaching students with learning disabilities
-Will soon be purchasing Soar to Success materials and Accelerated Reader books
-Discussed how to increase communication between general education teachers and specialists
-Had opportunity to observe other teachers and share ideas (though the district sub shortage has prevented some from being able to take time during the school day to watch other teachers).
Impact on Staff and Students:
-Teachers are more able to provide individualized assignments or give the same assignments with appropriate modifications, and students are allowed to use computer programs (such as Co Writer) to complete assignments.
-Teachers have access to materials that help them provide more individualized assignments. This has also resulted in general education teachers taking more responsibility for SIP students.
-Teachers learned strategies to motivate students and increase student achievement, and a committee was developed to teach the Love and Logic parenting class
-Provided general education teachers with more understanding of learning disabled students and many strategies to increase student achievement.
-Students involved in the Soar to Success programs learn strategies that compliment general education materials, and Accelerated Reader is a program that is used by all staff.
-Increased communication has resulted in programs for students that are consistent from the classroom to the resource room
Overall, the Sumner Inclusion Project has resulted in significant increases in student reading abilities which has impacted students' attitudes about school and reduced discipline referrals.
